CHAPTER 28: ROHAN

Overview

Rohan and Savannah begin their locked-room puzzle by assessing Grayson’s possible advantage as the unexpected eighth player in a Hawthorne-designed game. Their uneasy partnership mixes rivalry, attraction, and strategic suspicion as they use Rohan’s metal disk to uncover the instruction to use the room.

The clue leads them to examine the dining room itself, where a compass-like table and hidden murals suggest a more layered puzzle. Rohan uses a colored bottle as a lens to reveal the next directive: they must focus on the words.

Summary

Rohan considers the structure of the game and concludes that Grayson Hawthorne may have been added at the last minute, since the rooms seem built for seven players. Because the game is Hawthorne-designed, Rohan tells Savannah that Grayson has the advantage, but Savannah coolly insists that Grayson is only her half brother and that they can take the advantage back.

Rohan and Savannah settle into their forced partnership with mutual suspicion and flirtatious hostility. Rohan notices the chain and lock around Savannah’s hips and wonders whether it was only a hint about team play, but Savannah suspects he wants her to dismiss its importance. Rohan then produces the metal disk he won earlier, and Savannah immediately tries to take it.

Rohan keeps the disk from Savannah and studies its broken markings. He spins it upright on the dining table, causing the markings on both sides to blur together into readable letters. The disk reveals the instruction: Use the room.

Rohan and Savannah inspect the dining room for relevant features. The room contains a round table, six chairs, golden drapes, a bar cart, and an empty silver hutch. Savannah notices that the raised center of the table resembles a compass and turns it, but Rohan stops her, warning that it may require a precise combination rather than random movement.

They pull back the drapes and reveal two murals, one of sunrise and one of sunset. Rohan then spots a plain glass bottle on the bar cart filled with sunrise-orange liquid. When he holds the bottle up, the liquid filters the light and reveals hidden writing in the sunrise mural: TO SOLVE THE PUZZLE, FOCUS ON THE WORDS.
