Chapter 81
Overview
Dianna endures a prophetic nightmare: her house fractures as the caged Ig’Morruthen strains to escape, the sky tears open, and Kaden shows Samkiel lying dead while two crowned figures flank him, heralding the end. She wakes and confirms Samkiel is alive, seeking reassurance through intimacy.
Despite his promise to return, Samkiel leaves to consult the Higher One, and the lingering omen hints the barrier may soon fail and guardianship may end.
Summary
Dianna wakes to an empty bed and wanders a melting, shifting house that becomes the wrecked home she once shared with Gabby. Gabby paints cracks and insists a chained door must be opened or the world will end. The fractures deepen as the trapped Ig’Morruthen—the beast with Dianna’s features—swells against the walls, begging for freedom. Dianna flees through an unchained door as fire erupts behind her.
The scene shifts to a cavern beneath a star-torn sky where a vortex reveals worlds and colossal creatures taking flight as the barrier opens. Kaden appears, implying the vision could become real. He directs Dianna to a stone altar where Samkiel lies gray and unmoving in sacred garb. Behind Kaden, an army forms with two crowned figures radiating equal power. Kaden declares the last guardian dead and the end begun.
Dianna jolts awake beside a living Samkiel and clings to him, using physical intimacy to banish the dread and confirm he is warm and alive. Their connection reaffirms her fear of loss and his possessive devotion, grounding her after the vision’s threat.
Afterward, Dianna demands a promise that he will return. Samkiel vows nothing can keep him from her. He departs to meet the Higher One, leaving Dianna with the sense that the dream was an omen as the metaphorical lock rattles, signaling the persistent danger of a looming breach and the Ig’Morruthen’s pressure within.
