Chapter 42

Overview

Dianna, in her true form, devastates Kaden’s stronghold and prepares to confront him. Tobias ambushes her as a massive serpent, inflicting a wound that will not heal and revealing immortals’ vulnerability in their true forms. He intends to hold Dianna for Kaden, forcing Dianna to arm herself and engage.

Summary

Dianna, transformed into her true, winged form, unleashes fire across the ancient complexes built into Yejedin’s cliffs, destroying keeps, strongholds, and fleeing creatures. Her goal is to strip Kaden of resources and confront him at a citadel radiating his power.

Before she can reach it, Tobias erupts from a collapsing factory as a colossal serpent and clamps onto her throat. They crash through wreckage; Dianna’s form collapses to human, bleeding heavily. Tobias reveals why she is not healing: immortals can be mortally wounded only in their true forms, a natural failsafe, which makes Dianna uniquely vulnerable after his bite.

Gloating that this will make keeping her for Kaden easier, Tobias mocks her past defiance. Dianna refuses to yield, calls the forsaken blade, and vows to end both Tobias and Kaden. Tobias attacks, and the chapter closes as they clash, with Dianna fighting through the wound and the new, dangerous revelation.
