Chapter 58
Overview
Back at Rashearim, Samkiel confronts Cameron and Xavier for taking Dianna offsite, furious the vampire ambush nearly cost her. Dianna intervenes, claiming responsibility and forcing Samkiel to drop the public fallout. He orders the incident hidden from the council. The chapter cements control, secrecy, and Dianna’s agency after Seraphine’s death.
Summary
Samkiel carries an exhausted, injured Dianna back to Rashearim, silent and seething after the bloody confrontation with Seraphine. He orders Cameron and Xavier to stay put, then leaves Dianna to compose himself, his restraint barely holding. Alone, Dianna reflects on Seraphine’s ashes on her hands and the revelation that Seraphine married into the coven to protect Drake and Ethan, recognizing their shared willingness to sacrifice for love.
Samkiel’s restraint breaks as he berates Cameron and Xavier for taking Dianna to Onuna, warning how easily she could have been portaled away by “simple vampires.” The fear in his anger reveals the true stake: losing Dianna forever. Cameron and Xavier apologize, but Dianna descends despite her pain to stop the reprimand.
Dianna defends them, lying that the outing was her idea and that she manipulated them. Her intervention redirects Samkiel’s fury. She challenges her confinement, telling Samkiel to either drop it or take her to the council—calling Rashearim a beautiful prison. The ultimatum reframes the conflict as one of trust and autonomy.
Choosing containment over escalation, Samkiel orders Cameron and Xavier to bury the incident: report a handled vampire attack, eradicate any footage, and keep Dianna’s presence from the council. With the matter closed, Dianna ends the standoff pragmatically, asking Samkiel to remove the glass from her back.
