Chapter 34

Overview

Exhausted from fruitless searches, Logan and Vincent clash over Dianna’s fate, exposing Vincent’s trauma and Logan’s faith in Dianna’s humanity through Gabriella’s memory. As they pause to get food, two lipless-mouthed creatures ambush them, plunging the room into darkness and escalating the threat inside the Guild itself.

Summary

Logan, worn down by constant travel and nightly searches for Neverra, dozes in a Guild conference room while poring over texts with Vincent. The surviving mark on Logan’s finger reassures him that Neverra lives, keeping his hope alive amid their stalled efforts.

They discuss the current state of their allies: Imogen remains with the council, Samkiel has just returned from rebuilding a city, and Cameron and Xavier are guarding Dianna downstairs. Vincent bristles at Dianna’s presence, calling for her execution and equating her danger to Nismera’s.

Logan challenges Vincent’s fears, arguing that Dianna’s love for her late sister Gabriella shaped her actions. He compares Dianna’s grief to what he would do if he ever lost Neverra, pressing Vincent to admit that love and loss drive vengeance. Vincent reluctantly concedes the point without surrendering his distrust.

Deciding to fetch food and step away from the research, Logan and Vincent head for the door. Two creatures with lipless hollows for mouths suddenly appear in the doorway, inhale, and everything goes black, ending the scene with an unexpected assault inside the Guild.
