Capítulo 9

Overview

Lily's rereading of her journal leaves Lily emotionally shaken and newly aware of her mother's lingering pain. Ryle then arrives after an exhausting, career-significant surgery, and Lily's tenderness toward him deepens their intimacy.

The chapter marks a major shift in Lily and Ryle's relationship: their no-sex boundary ends, and Ryle frames Lily as someone he already feels intensely attached to. This deepens the romance while raising the stakes of Lily's decision to trust him.

Summary

After rereading Lily's journal, Lily is surprised by how strongly the memories still affect her. Lily cries, feels foolish for thinking the past no longer hurts, and especially longs to reach out to her mother, realizing Lily has not fully considered what her mother endured before Andrew's death.

Before calling her mother, Lily sees several missed texts from Ryle and realizes Lily's phone was silenced. When Lily replies, Ryle says he is already climbing the stairs to Lily's apartment. Ryle arrives exhausted, with red eyes and dark circles, and Lily brings him inside.

Ryle explains that he has just assisted in an eighteen-hour surgery that was groundbreaking enough to be written about in medical journals. Although Ryle is too tired for sex, Ryle tells Lily he missed her and sleeps better beside her. Lily accepts, reminding herself that their relationship is still supposed to be a test.

Seeing how drained Ryle is, Lily gets lotion and massages Ryle's hands, then Ryle's shoulders, neck, back, arms, and scalp. The tenderness moves Ryle, who tells Lily she may be the best thing that has ever happened to him. The moment shifts from comfort into desire as Ryle kisses Lily more deeply.

Lily decides they have waited long enough, and Ryle responds with renewed energy. They have sex for the first time, and Lily experiences the encounter as confident, intense, and unlike her previous relationships. Afterward, Ryle tells Lily she was right that one time with her would not be enough, calling Lily the most addictive kind of drug.
