Capítulo 33

Overview

After Lily’s baby shower, Ryle unexpectedly reenters Lily’s private space by helping move gifts and assembling the nursery crib. The encounter exposes Lily’s ongoing love for Ryle and Ryle’s grief over the consequences of his violence, especially the distance from the unborn baby.

Lily nearly softens but chooses to maintain boundaries, guided by her mother’s warning and her own need for safety. The chapter leaves their separation and future co-parenting unresolved, while showing that Ryle wants involvement and Lily is not yet ready to negotiate what that means.

Summary

Lily attends a baby shower hosted by Allysa. Lily’s mother, Ryle’s mother, the flower-shop employees, former coworkers, and Devin come, and the party turns out happier than Lily expected. Afterward, Lily and Allysa pack the gifts, and Marshall begins carrying them down to Lily’s apartment.

When Lily opens Allysa’s door, Ryle is standing outside. Lily has not spoken to Ryle since their argument three months earlier, but Ryle takes the gift bags and helps move them. Marshall silently checks whether Lily is comfortable being alone with Ryle, and Lily agrees because Lily knows she cannot avoid Ryle forever.

In Lily’s apartment, Ryle brings the gifts to the nursery while Lily stays in the kitchen, anxious about his presence. Ryle offers to assemble the crib, and Lily accepts because Ryle is also the baby’s father. Lily feels the pull of Ryle’s beauty and familiarity, imagining how easy it would be to let Ryle back in, but Lily remembers her mother’s warning that if Ryle truly loves Lily, Ryle will not allow Lily to return to him.

After Ryle finishes the crib, Lily sees Ryle standing silently beside it, visibly grieving over the child Ryle may not live with or help raise every day. Lily realizes Ryle does want to be part of the baby’s life, and Lily reflects on how difficult it is to stop loving someone abusive when that person has also been a source of happiness.

Ryle notices Lily’s lowered defenses and begins to move toward Lily, but Lily steps back, restoring the boundary between them. Ryle hides his hurt, cleans up, and leaves after offering future help. Lily cries for Ryle’s sadness, but Lily does not discuss reconciliation, separation, or co-parenting because Lily is not ready; for now, Lily needs Ryle to show the patience Ryle has failed to show before.
