Capítulo 23
Overview
Ryle discovers Lily’s hidden emotional history with Atlas through the Boston magnet, the article about Bib’s, and Lily’s journals, causing Ryle’s jealousy to erupt into severe violence. The attack forces Lily to confront that Ryle’s abuse mirrors the cycle Lily grew up witnessing with Lily’s parents.
After Ryle injures Lily and falls asleep, Lily chooses survival over secrecy and calls Atlas for help. Atlas rescues Lily, but Lily’s request to avoid Ryle’s hospital shows how fear, shame, and concern for Ryle’s future still complicate Lily’s escape.
Summary
Lily returns home after spending extra time with Allysa and finishing work so Lily can take the next two days off with Ryle. Lily is happy and thoughtful after Ryle’s earlier suggestion about having a baby, though Lily feels unsure whether Lily is ready to start a family.
When Lily enters the dark apartment, Ryle is waiting in the kitchen with whisky and the Boston magnet. Ryle asks where Lily got it, and Lily lies that Lily does not remember because Lily does not want to explain Atlas’s connection to it. Ryle begins touching Lily in a way that seems sexual but quickly turns controlling and frightening as Ryle keeps asking about the magnet.
Ryle then makes Lily read the article about Bib’s winning the business award. The article reveals that Atlas Corrigan named the restaurant for someone important to Atlas, and Ryle connects the meaning to Lily. When Lily tries to leave the confrontation, Lily finds their bedroom covered with Lily’s old journals and belongings, realizing Ryle has read Lily’s diaries.
Ryle’s jealousy and anger escalate. Ryle bites Lily over Lily’s tattoo, accuses Atlas of being present in everything, pins Lily to the bed, and ignores Lily’s pleas for Ryle to stop. Lily is terrified, remembers Lily’s father abusing Lily’s mother, fights back by biting Ryle, and Ryle headbutts Lily, knocking Lily unconscious.
When Lily regains awareness, Ryle is panicked and apologetic but still holding Lily down. Lily pretends to soothe Ryle until Ryle falls asleep, then carefully escapes from under Ryle, searches for Lily’s phone and belongings, and considers calling Allysa, the police, or Lily’s mother. Lily decides Lily cannot handle those consequences in the moment and calls Atlas instead, using the number Lily had memorized.
Atlas immediately recognizes Lily’s distress, comes to Lily’s apartment, and is enraged when Atlas sees Lily’s injuries. Lily stops Atlas from going after Ryle and asks only to leave. Atlas helps Lily out, carries Lily when Lily becomes weak, and drives Lily toward medical help; Lily asks not to go to Massachusetts General because Lily still fears the impact on Ryle’s career despite hating Ryle for what Ryle has done.
