Capítulo 5
Overview
Lily returns to her flower shop after recovering from her ankle injury and finds that Allysa and Marshall have made major progress, pushing Lily closer to opening her business. That night, an exhausted Ryle appears at Lily's apartment and admits Lily has been distracting him from his demanding medical career.
Ryle tries to turn their attraction into a one-time sexual encounter, but Ryle falls asleep before anything happens. The failed encounter leaves Lily emotionally conflicted: Ryle promises distance, while Lily tries to convince herself that her own ambitions matter more than wanting Ryle to come back.
Summary
After a week of resting her sprained ankle, Lily returns to the building she bought for her flower shop. Allysa and Marshall have already cleared trash, organized the remaining items, washed windows, scrubbed floors, and cleaned the future office area. Because Allysa limits how much Lily can do on her feet, Lily focuses on planning the shop, choosing paint colors, and setting an opening target about fifty-four days away.
That evening, exhausted after more work at the shop, Lily hears knocking at her apartment door. She is shocked to find Ryle, tired, unshaven, and still in his hospital scrubs, standing outside. Ryle explains that he knocked on twenty-nine doors because he knew Lily's building but not her apartment number.
Once inside, Ryle admits that the coming months are crucial for his residency and exams, but he has not been able to stop thinking about Lily. After a forty-eight-hour shift, Ryle asks Lily to have sex with him once so he can get Lily out of his system. Lily calls the request ridiculous, but Ryle persists, pleading and joking until Lily agrees to consider a one-night encounter if she can shower first.
Lily warns Ryle that sleeping with her will only make things worse for him, but Ryle insists he is not the kind of man who needs anyone more than once. Lily spends nearly an hour getting ready, convincing herself she can handle a one-night stand. When Lily returns, Ryle has fallen into a deep sleep in Lily's bed, exhausted from work.
Lily lies beside Ryle instead of waking him, takes a teasing photo on Ryle's phone to show what he missed, and falls asleep. The next morning, Ryle wakes before seven, touches Lily's open-heart tattoo, kisses it, and apologizes for falling asleep. Ryle says he must leave, promises never to do this again, and tells Lily this will be the last time Lily hears from him.
Lily is disappointed because part of Lily wants Ryle to try again, but Lily reminds herself that she and Ryle want different things. After Ryle leaves, Lily forces herself not to feel rejected and redirects her focus to her own goals, especially the flower shop.
