Capítulo 24
Overview
At the hospital, Lily receives treatment for injuries from Ryle's attack while Atlas remains with Lily as a protective presence. Lily refuses a sexual assault exam, then learns from the doctor that Lily is pregnant, a revelation that intensifies Lily's horror at repeating Lily's mother's cycle of abuse.
Unable to stay at the hospital, Lily leaves with Atlas, who brings Lily to Atlas's home and gives Lily a safe place to recover. The chapter shifts Lily's crisis from a single violent incident into a life-altering decision about safety, motherhood, and whether Lily will break the pattern Lily grew up witnessing.
Summary
At the hospital, Atlas stays across the room while a nurse treats Lily's injuries, including a cut and a bite mark. Because Lily's wounds clearly suggest an attack, the nurse asks Atlas to leave so she can question Lily privately, but Lily quickly explains that Atlas did not hurt her and asks that he stay.
The nurse asks whether Lily was sexually assaulted and recommends a SANE exam. Lily refuses, insisting that Ryle tried but stopped and that Lily is not protecting him this time. Atlas urges Lily to complete the exam in case Lily later wants to press charges, but Lily firmly declines.
A doctor examines Lily's head and shoulder and says the hospital wants to monitor Lily rather than perform a CT scan. When Lily asks why, the doctor explains that X-rays are avoided for pregnant women unless necessary. The revelation shocks Lily, who did not know Lily was pregnant, and after the doctor and nurse leave, Lily breaks down in Atlas's arms.
Overwhelmed by the assault, the pregnancy, and the realization that Lily's life now resembles Lily's mother's, Lily asks to leave. Atlas thinks Lily should remain under observation but agrees when Lily insists, helping Lily dress and quietly taking Lily out of the hospital.
Atlas drives Lily to his house in Wellesley, where Lily notices Atlas lives alone in a comfortable, expensive-looking home. Lily reflects bitterly on how people blame abused women for staying instead of focusing on abusive men. Atlas gives Lily water, offers food, and prepares a guest room for Lily.
Lily showers, vomits from the trauma of the night, and finds that Atlas has left clean clothes and made the bed. Lily dresses in Atlas's oversized pajamas, gets into bed, and cries silently, emotionally exhausted and shaken by everything that has happened.
