Capítulo 13

Overview

Ryle visits Lily at the flower shop after a long shift, and their relationship deepens through both physical intimacy and an honest discussion about Ryle’s fear of liking Lily too much. Ryle reveals more about Ryle’s family, including Ryle’s close contact with Ryle’s mother and the name of Ryle’s deceased brother, Emerson. Lily’s willingness to accept Ryle’s ambition strengthens their bond, but Ryle’s guarded reaction to Emerson shows that an unresolved pain remains beneath the romance.

Summary

Ryle texts Lily while she is working late at the flower shop, and Lily invites him over without hesitation. Lily has closed the store but remains in the office catching up on the disorder of the shop’s first month. Lily reflects that business is still uneven but promising, and that Lily is also happy with how her relationship with Ryle is developing.

Ryle arrives directly from work, exhausted and still in his medical scrubs. While Lily finishes orders, Ryle lies on the new office sofa but stays awake watching Lily. Ryle admits that he may like Lily “too much,” because this is Ryle’s first real relationship and Ryle is unsure what the right pace should be.

Lily reassures Ryle that Ryle’s demanding career does not bother Lily, though Lily worries about Ryle overworking himself. Ryle explains that Lily makes the relationship easy because Lily supports Ryle’s ambitions instead of pressuring Ryle to become someone else. Their conversation turns physical, and Lily and Ryle become intimate in the office, reinforcing their strong attraction and emotional closeness.

Afterward, Ryle’s mother calls, which prompts Lily to ask about Ryle’s parents. Ryle describes Ryle’s mother as loving but dominant and critical, and says Ryle’s father is a psychiatrist who chose a medical field with a more normal life than Ryle’s. Ryle explains that Ryle’s parents live in England, that Ryle and Allysa visit them, and that Ryle’s mother already knows about Lily because Ryle talks about Lily often.

Ryle plays a voicemail from Ryle’s mother, who affectionately asks about Lily and whether Lily is still Ryle’s girlfriend. Lily is amused and touched, and Lily says that she looks forward to meeting the parents who raised both Allysa and Ryle. When Lily asks the name of Ryle’s deceased brother, Ryle stiffens and answers, “Emerson.” Lily senses that Ryle does not want to discuss the loss, so Lily chooses not to press him, and the night shifts into a gentler intimacy.
