Capítulo 35
Overview
Lily goes into labor and gives birth to a daughter, Emerson, with Ryle present and emotionally involved. The joy of seeing Ryle as a loving father forces Lily to confront the danger of staying with him and repeating the abusive pattern she inherited from her parents. Lily asks for a divorce, and Ryle finally understands why leaving is necessary for their daughter’s future.
Summary
Lily is two days from her due date and on maternity leave, spending her days resting at home. Ryle has been staying on her couch for a week so he can be nearby when labor begins. Their arrangement is cautious but civil: Ryle is helpful and excited about fatherhood, while Lily continues avoiding anything that feels like rebuilding their marriage before the baby arrives.
After Ryle leaves for work, Lily’s water breaks while she is trying to answer a call from Lucy about problems at the flower shop. Lily calmly gives Lucy instructions, then calls Ryle. Ryle rushes home, helps Lily through contractions, and gets her dressed for the hospital. Before they leave, Ryle sees Lily’s bare pregnant stomach for the first time, calls her beautiful, and shares a tender moment of gratitude as he touches the baby.
Lily and Ryle reach the hospital just in time. Lily is already nine centimeters dilated, and the birth happens so quickly that Ryle cannot call their families. Ryle supports Lily through the delivery, and their daughter is born. They marvel over the baby together, and Lily suggests naming her after Ryle’s late brother. Ryle accepts the name Emerson, with possible nicknames Emma or Emmy.
Watching Ryle hold Emerson, Lily realizes how much Ryle loves their daughter and how fiercely he would protect her. That realization leads Lily to make her final decision: she asks Ryle for a divorce. Ryle begs for another chance, but Lily asks what he would tell Emerson if Emerson one day came to him after being abused by a partner in the same ways Ryle hurt Lily.
Ryle breaks down and admits he would beg Emerson to leave and tell her she deserves better. Lily and Ryle grieve together, holding each other and their daughter, but Lily understands that ending the marriage is the only way to break the cycle of abuse. After Ryle leaves the room to collect himself, Lily promises Emerson that the pattern ends with them.
