Capítulo 21
Overview
Lily continues trying to justify her decision to stay with Ryle by distinguishing him from her abusive father and focusing on his remorse, compassion, and willingness to change. A serious argument over Ryle’s career and a possible move to Minnesota becomes a test of their new boundaries, and Ryle de-escalates by walking away before choosing Lily’s desire to remain in Boston.
Ryle then surprises Lily by buying them a new apartment in Allysa’s building, turning their commitment to Boston into something tangible and celebratory. The chapter temporarily restores Lily’s hope in the marriage, even as it underscores how much she is rationalizing in order to preserve it.
Summary
Lily finishes paperwork at the flower shop after Serena leaves for the day. Allysa has been on maternity leave for two weeks, so Lily now relies on Serena and Lucy as full-time employees. Nearly a month has passed since the stairwell incident, and Lily reflects on how difficult forgiveness has been, even after learning about Ryle’s childhood trauma.
Lily weighs Ryle’s anger against the compassion she sees in him and insists to herself that he is not like her father. Lily believes marriage requires effort and second chances, but she also recognizes the stubborn inner voice shaped by growing up around abuse. Lily tells herself she is strong, will not become her mother, and can help Ryle confront his anger with firm boundaries.
Lily then recalls a recent fight that tested that belief. Ryle has finished his residency and may attend a three-month specialization course in Cambridge, England, but the real conflict begins when Ryle says he has been offered a job at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and wants them to move. Lily objects because her mother, Allysa, and her flower shop are in Boston. As the argument escalates, Ryle throws a vase of flowers onto the floor, then chooses to leave for an hour to calm down instead of letting the fight worsen.
When Ryle returns, Ryle apologetically reframes his priorities. Ryle tells Lily that although he wants to be the best in his field, Lily’s happiness matters more than working at the top hospital, so they will stay in Boston. Lily takes this as proof that staying with Ryle was the right decision, even though Lily feels some guilt about limiting his professional plans.
Later, Allysa texts Lily to come give an opinion on furniture. At Allysa’s building, Lily finds a note directing Lily to another apartment, where Ryle surprises Lily by revealing he bought a new apartment for them that morning. Lily is initially unsettled that Ryle made such a large decision without Lily, but Lily admits the apartment is perfect: spacious, beautiful, and overlooking Boston Harbor.
Ryle explains that after they decided to remain in Boston, Ryle moved forward with buying the apartment, with Allysa’s help, as a surprise. Ryle shows Lily the three-bedroom, two-bath home with an office and a large balcony, telling Lily they can always keep the view from the rooftop where they first met. Overwhelmed, Lily cries with happiness. Allysa joins them, and later Marshall comes down; the four eat Chinese food on the empty living room floor and excitedly discuss decorating, becoming neighbors, and Allysa’s approaching birth.
