Capítulo 30
Overview
Ryle returns early and discovers Lily's pregnancy, forcing the confrontation Lily had been delaying. With Marshall nearby as protection, Lily and Ryle face the damage of his abuse, Lily's lingering feelings for Atlas, and Ryle's new plea to remain part of the baby's life.
The encounter confirms that love and remorse do not erase Lily's fear: Ryle's attempt at intimacy triggers memories of his violence. Lily's final cruel remark wounds Ryle but leaves Lily disturbed by her own capacity for retaliation.
Summary
Lily returns to the apartment she still shares with Ryle in name, though it feels tainted after his assault. She has been sleeping in the guest room, hiding her twenty-week pregnancy from most people, and worrying that she may have to tell Ryle before he returns from England.
When Lily opens the door, Ryle is unexpectedly inside and immediately sees her pregnant belly. Lily is frightened, but Ryle assures her he will not hurt her and reveals that Marshall is present to help Lily feel safer. Marshall explains that Ryle asked him to come without telling Lily or Allysa, and Marshall promises to stay nearby if Ryle gets angry.
Ryle and Lily go to the bedroom, where the sight of the bed revives Lily's memory of the assault. Ryle asks permission to touch her stomach, then kneels, kisses her belly, and reacts with visible love and shock. Lily feels conflicting emotions: anger, pity, longing, resentment, and a wish that forgiveness were possible.
Lily demands raw truths and forces Ryle to begin with an apology. When Ryle says Lily does not know what he has suffered, Lily explodes, telling him he has no idea what it is like to fear the person she loves. Lily admits she still loves Atlas and kept reminders of him, but insists none of that justified Ryle hurting her under any circumstances.
Ryle admits he cannot undo what he did and that Lily may never trust a promise that it will not happen again. Ryle says he came to apologize, accept a job in Minnesota, and say goodbye, but the pregnancy changes everything because he already loves the baby. Ryle begs Lily not to take the child away from him, asks her to help him, and kisses her.
For a moment Lily's body responds to Ryle's tenderness, but his touch triggers flashbacks of his violence: pulling her hair, biting her, and headbutting her in the bed. Lily freezes, and Ryle understands that Lily can no longer bear his touch. As Ryle leaves, Lily tells him she wishes the baby were not his, then feels cruel and frightened by how much the comment makes Lily resemble her father.
