Capítulo 15
Overview
Dinner at Bib’s forces Lily’s past and present into direct conflict when Atlas appears as the restaurant’s chef and owner, sees Lily’s injury, and assumes Ryle hurt her. Atlas confronts Lily and then attacks Ryle, exposing his protective feelings and triggering Ryle’s jealousy. Afterward, Lily reassures Ryle that she wants only him, choosing to believe Atlas is wrong about the danger Ryle represents.
Summary
Lily arrives late to dinner at Bib’s because a customer came into the flower shop to order funeral flowers just as she was closing. She is anxious because Allysa insisted on eating at the restaurant after Ryle praised it, and Lily does not want to see Atlas. When Allysa notices Lily’s injured eye, Ryle covers for the previous night by claiming Lily slipped in spilled olive oil, and Lily goes along with the lie.
The dinner remains calm until dessert. The server says the chef is sending free dessert to congratulate pregnant Allysa, and Atlas appears with the desserts. Lily realizes Atlas is not just an employee but the chef and owner. Atlas notices Lily’s injured eye and Ryle’s bandaged hand, becomes visibly angry, and leaves abruptly, making the others think he is rude.
Lily goes to the bathroom to calm down and plan an escape from the restaurant. Atlas follows her in, locks the door, and demands to know what happened. Lily insists the injury was an accident and defends Ryle, but Atlas tells Lily to leave him and says Lily sounds like her mother. Lily says she is more afraid of Atlas in that moment than she has ever been of Ryle, so Atlas steps back and lets her leave.
When Lily opens the bathroom door, Ryle is outside and sees Lily with Atlas. Atlas walks away but then turns back, grabs Ryle, and warns Ryle not to touch Lily again. Ryle recognizes Atlas’s name from Lily’s earlier “naked truths” and humiliates Atlas by calling him the homeless boy Lily had sex with out of pity. Atlas and Ryle fight until restaurant staff separate them, and Atlas orders Ryle out of the restaurant.
Lily follows Ryle outside, and he drives her car back to her place in silence. In the garage, Ryle’s hurt and anger spill out, but he asks for “naked truths” instead of accusations. Lily admits she knew Atlas worked at the restaurant but did not want to see him, explains Atlas followed her into the bathroom, and says Atlas only reacted because both of them grew up around abuse.
Ryle asks Lily to tell him if she does not want to be with him because seeing her with Atlas hurt deeply. Lily cries and tells Ryle she wants only him. They embrace, exchange declarations of love, and Lily privately wishes she could erase the last two days, convinced Atlas is wrong about Ryle.
