Overview

At Allysa’s party, Lily’s attempt to use Devin as a harmless date exposes how jealous and emotionally invested Ryle has become. Lily confronts Ryle about the mixed signals of flowers, flirting, and a hidden rooftop photo, forcing Ryle to admit that Lily means more to Ryle than a one-night stand.

Ryle agrees not to have sex with Lily as proof that Ryle wants something deeper, shifting their relationship from unresolved attraction toward a possible romance. However, Allysa’s warning about Ryle’s poor relationship history introduces a new concern about whether Ryle can truly change.

Summary

Lily attends Allysa’s party with Devin, a former advertising coworker, because Lily does not want to arrive alone and wants a little help making Ryle jealous. Allysa welcomes them into her and Marshall’s lavish apartment, and Devin quickly plays along by introducing himself as Lily’s sexual partner, though he soon realizes Ryle is watching him with hostility.

While socializing, Lily notices an abstract-looking photograph on the wall. Ryle appears beside Lily and asks whether Lily brought a date; Lily implies she did it to make things easier for Ryle, since Ryle keeps insisting he does not want anything serious. After Ryle leaves, Lily realizes the blurry image is a distorted enlargement of the photo Ryle took of Lily on the rooftop the night they met, which makes Lily angry because Ryle’s actions feel intimate despite Ryle’s refusal to commit.

Lily goes to the rooftop for air, and Ryle follows, clearing the space of other guests. Lily confronts Ryle directly, saying Ryle confuses and hurts Lily by flirting, sending flowers, and displaying Lily’s photo while still claiming Ryle only wants one night. Ryle first stays silent, and Lily leaves, thinking Ryle will not respond.

As Lily prepares to leave with Devin, Ryle pushes through the party, picks Lily up, and carries Lily to Ryle’s bedroom. Ryle kisses Lily intensely, but Lily stops Ryle because Ryle still has not answered Lily’s concerns. Ryle then admits the photo has been in Ryle’s apartment for months because Lily affected Ryle deeply, says the flowers were sent because Ryle is proud of Lily, and confesses that Lily makes Ryle want to be different even though Ryle does not know how.

Lily tells Ryle the way to prove Ryle wants more than sex is not to have sex with Lily. Ryle agrees, and the two sleep in Ryle’s bed without having sex. The next morning, Lily has coffee with Allysa, who explains Marshall’s wealth and then starts to warn Lily that Ryle does not have a good relationship history.

Ryle overhears Allysa’s warning and becomes tense, telling Allysa that as Ryle’s sister Allysa should have more faith in Ryle. After Allysa leaves, Ryle reassures Lily with affection, says Ryle has an important surgery coming up and may not see Lily for a few days, but promises to see Lily before Lily’s formal opening on Friday.
