Capítulo 34

Overview

Lily finishes the nursery and invites Ryle to see it, leading to their first direct conversation about his role before the baby’s birth. Ryle wants to be both father and husband, but Lily makes clear that Ryle’s violence has damaged Lily’s trust and that any access or reconciliation must happen on Lily’s terms.

The chapter shifts Lily and Ryle from avoidance toward cautious co-parenting. Lily postpones any final decision about divorce until after the birth, while setting firm emotional boundaries to protect Lily’s stability.

Summary

Two weeks after Ryle assembled the crib, Lily finishes painting a garden mural in the baby’s room and adds plants from her shop. The completed nursery makes Lily proud but also lonely, so Lily texts Allysa and then Lily’s mother to invite them over. Both are unavailable until the next day.

Against Lily’s better judgment, Lily texts Ryle to tell him the nursery is ready. Ryle immediately comes over in his medical uniform. Lily shows Ryle the mural, the baby swing, the changing table, and the tiny diapers, and Ryle reacts with sincere awe and sadness at the life he has been partly missing.

The moment forces Lily and Ryle into the conversation they have been avoiding. Ryle admits he does not know what role Lily wants him to have, but he wants to be part of their baby’s life and still wants to be Lily’s husband. Lily tells Ryle that she will not keep him from his daughter, but Ryle’s temper and past violence make Lily afraid to trust Ryle alone with the baby yet.

Ryle accepts that trust must be rebuilt on Lily’s terms. When Ryle asks about their marriage, Lily says she does not want to give Ryle false hope: if forced to decide immediately, Lily would probably choose divorce, but Lily does not want to make that decision before the baby is born.

As Ryle prepares to leave for work, the two share a restrained, emotional moment while holding hands. Lily asks Ryle not to try to convince Lily to forgive him or kiss Lily until after the birth, because Lily can only handle one life-changing event at a time. Ryle agrees, and after Ryle leaves, Lily feels relief because they have made a small but important step toward mature co-parenting.
