Capítulo 27
Overview
Lily returns to her flower shop still traumatized by Ryle's attack and realizes her fear of him now follows her into places that once felt safe. Ryle appears, gives Lily the apartment keys, and announces he is leaving for England for three months, creating a forced separation rather than reconciliation. Lily confronts Ryle with the lasting consequences of his refusal to trust or ask for the truth, and after Ryle leaves, Lily is shaken by the reality that she is carrying his child.
Summary
Lily returns to her flower shop frightened in a way she has never felt there before. She turns on the lights, checks the office cautiously, and feels Ryle's absence and presence everywhere. When Lily turns on her phone for the first time since the night before, she finds twenty-nine messages from Ryle, a number that bitterly echoes the twenty-nine doors Ryle once knocked on to find her apartment.
Throughout the workday, Lily remains tense and watchful, looking over her shoulder and at the door whenever it opens. Ryle does not call, but Lily wonders whether Ryle has permanently damaged her sense of safety. Allysa calls after lunch and, from Allysa's tone, Lily realizes Allysa does not know about the fight. Lily listens briefly to Allysa talk about the baby, then pretends a customer has arrived so Lily can end the call.
Lily plans to leave once Lucy returns from break, but Ryle enters the shop while Lily is alone. Lily freezes behind the counter with her hand near the stapler, aware it would offer little protection but ready to use it if necessary. Seeing Ryle pulls Lily back into the terror and anger of his most recent assault.
Ryle approaches slowly and places the apartment keys on the counter. Ryle tells Lily that he is leaving for England that night and will be gone for three months. Ryle says the bills are paid, that Lily needs time, and that Lily should return home because Ryle promises he will not be there.
As Ryle turns to leave without apologizing, Lily understands that an apology cannot repair what Ryle did and that separation is the only possible step. Still, Lily calls Ryle back and tells Ryle that the worst part is that he could have asked Lily the truth about the journal, and Lily would have been honest. Instead, Ryle chose not to ask for help, and now both of them will suffer the consequences of Ryle's actions for the rest of their lives.
Ryle visibly struggles but accepts that Ryle cannot approach Lily or plead for forgiveness. After Ryle leaves, Lily locks the door, slides to the floor, and trembles. Lily is devastated by the fact that part of Ryle is growing inside her and that one day Lily will have to tell the child the truth.
