Capítulo 14
Overview
A playful night between Lily and Ryle turns traumatic when Ryle panics over an injury to his surgical hand and shoves Lily, causing her to hit her face. The incident forces Lily to compare Ryle to her abusive father, even as Ryle’s remorse and vulnerability make her want to believe it was an accident.
Lily sets a clear boundary that she will leave if it ever happens again, but she also chooses to forgive Ryle for now. Their mutual declaration of love deepens the relationship while leaving a painful warning sign at its center.
Summary
Ryle calls Lily for the first time instead of texting and says he is coming over with wine for a night together before taking Saturday off. Lily teases him by saying she is cooking dinner while wearing only an apron, and when Ryle arrives, the two flirt in the kitchen. Ryle explains that he is celebrating Allysa’s pregnancy, his relationship with Lily, and a rare surgery scheduled for Monday to separate conjoined twins joined at the skull.
After Ryle showers, Lily drinks more wine and talks to Lily’s mother on the phone. Ryle mentions that he made dinner reservations at Bib’s for the next night with Allysa and Marshall, which alarms Lily because Lily wants to avoid Atlas. Lily hides the real reason for her discomfort and only says she did not like the restaurant.
Lily realizes the casserole has burned, and Ryle rushes to pull it from the oven without a potholder. Ryle burns his hand, drops the dish, and glass and food scatter across the floor. Lily laughs from the shock and drunken absurdity of the moment, but Ryle panics about his hand and surgery, lashes out, and shoves Lily hard enough that Lily falls and hits her face near her eye on a cabinet handle.
The shove immediately reminds Lily of her father hurting Lily’s mother and apologizing afterward. Ryle apologizes desperately and says he panicked because of his burned hand, but Lily pushes Ryle away, causing Ryle to fall onto broken glass and cut his right hand. Despite Lily’s anger and fear, Lily helps stop the bleeding, while Ryle focuses more on whether Lily is hurt than on his own injured hand.
Ryle and Lily move to the bedroom, where Ryle continues apologizing and the two seek comfort in each other despite the pain and confusion. Later, Lily treats Ryle’s burns and cut while Ryle holds ice to Lily’s injured eye. Lily tells Ryle that the shove made her question everything she knew about him and warns that if anything like it happens again, Lily will leave without hesitation.
Ryle swears it will never happen again and insists he is not like Lily’s father. After cleaning the kitchen and bringing Lily soda because it used to comfort him after bad days, Ryle lies beside Lily. Lily decides Ryle deserves one chance at forgiveness, and the chapter ends with Ryle telling Lily he is in love with her and Lily saying she loves him too.
