Overview
Six months after her father's funeral, Lily commits to a risky new future by buying a neglected building for her flower shop and developing a dark, unconventional concept for it. She hires Allysa, whose enthusiasm gives Lily practical help and an unexpected new friendship.
Lily's accident brings Ryle back into her life when she learns he is Allysa's brother. Their attraction is still strong, but both recognize that Lily wants commitment while Ryle wants only casual sex, making their renewed proximity emotionally dangerous.
Summary
Six months after Andrew Bloom's funeral, Lily shows her mother the dusty former restaurant she has bought with her inheritance. Lily plans to turn it into a flower shop, but the space needs extensive work. Lily's mother is cautious rather than openly approving, warning that the choice will look bold if the business succeeds and foolish if it fails, then urging Lily to make sure it is brave and bold.
After Lily's mother leaves for a school open house, Allysa enters because of an old help-wanted sign. Lily explains that she is not truly hiring yet, but Allysa is immediately excited by the idea of a flower shop and offers to help with cleaning and design for free. Lily refuses unpaid labor and hires Allysa for ten dollars an hour, and Allysa starts immediately despite wearing white capris and carrying an expensive purse.
Over the next two hours, Lily and Allysa sort the clutter and brainstorm a concept for the shop. Inspired by her mother's words, Lily decides the store should be brave and bold by reversing the usual sweetness of flowers: dark colors, edgy displays, and arrangements that acknowledge both beauty and darkness. Allysa is briefly unsure, then embraces the twisted originality of the idea.
While clearing boxes from the future office, Lily falls from a chair and twists her ankle. Allysa calls her husband, Marshall, and then her brother for help. Marshall arrives in a SpongeBob onesie with ice, and Allysa's brother turns out to be Ryle Kincaid, whom Lily met on the rooftop six months earlier. Ryle examines Lily's ankle, determines it is likely not broken, and wraps it while he and Lily pretend at first that they are meeting for the first time.
Alone briefly, Lily and Ryle acknowledge their continued attraction through blunt truths. Ryle says he still wants a one-night stand, shocking Allysa when Allysa overhears him, and Lily admits Ryle's directness affects her. Later, Lily tells Ryle that his flirtation is unfair because they want different things; Ryle agrees that avoiding each other would be best because he thinks about Lily more than he wants to.
Ryle advises Lily to rest her ankle for several days, which threatens her renovation plans, but Allysa promises to help clean while Lily recovers. Allysa gives Lily her number and remains apologetic for Ryle's behavior, while Ryle keeps his distance and refuses to drive Lily home because he has been drinking. As Lily leaves, she realizes that both times she has seen Ryle were on painful days, yet his presence made those days feel less disastrous, and she suspects she will see him again because he is Allysa's brother.
