Capítulo 31
Overview
Lily begins preparing to tell her mother about the pregnancy while still avoiding contact with Ryle. A supportive evening with Allysa and Marshall gives Lily both practical exposure to caring for a baby and an emotional milestone when she feels her own baby move for the first time.
The chapter reinforces Lily’s grief over experiencing pregnancy without Ryle as a safe partner, but Allysa’s reassurance helps Lily reclaim joy and confidence in becoming a mother.
Summary
Two days after Ryle learns about Lily’s pregnancy, Lily receives a text from her mother saying she misses her. Lily decides it is time to tell her mother about the pregnancy, though Lily fears discussing the situation with Ryle more than revealing the baby itself. Lily arranges to visit the next afternoon and asks her mother to make lasagna.
Allysa also invites Lily upstairs for homemade pizza. Because Lily assumes Ryle may be staying with Allysa and Marshall, Lily asks who will be there. Allysa reassures Lily that she would not put Lily in that position and explains that Ryle is working until the next morning, so Lily agrees to come after work.
At dinner with Allysa, Marshall, and baby Rylee, Lily asks practical questions about infant feeding, realizing she needs to learn more before giving birth. Seeing Allysa and Marshall exhausted, Lily offers to take Rylee downstairs for the night so they can sleep. Allysa hesitates, but Marshall eagerly accepts, and Lily frames it as a sleepover with Aunt Lily.
As Allysa packs supplies for Rylee, Allysa jokes about finally having time alone with Marshall. While Lily and Allysa wait on the bed, Lily suddenly feels her baby move for the first time. Allysa tries to feel it too, but the movement is still too faint from the outside.
The joy of the moment is undercut when Lily thinks that Ryle should be beside Lily, sharing the milestone as the baby’s father. Allysa notices Lily’s sadness and comforts Lily, telling Lily that even if Ryle’s involvement remains uncertain, motherhood will be one of the best experiences of Lily’s life and that Lily will be a great mother. The reassurance restores Lily’s happiness, and Allysa lightens the mood by urging Lily to take Rylee so Allysa can enjoy the night with Marshall.
