Capítulo 16

Overview

Atlas visits Lily’s flower shop after the fight at his restaurant, shifting the encounter from confrontation to apology and unresolved tenderness. He leaves Lily his phone number as a quiet offer of help, while Lily insists she will not need it and continues trying to protect her relationship with Ryle. The signed Ellen DeGeneres book reveals Atlas’s long-held care for Lily, deepening Lily’s emotional conflict and the secrecy surrounding Atlas’s presence in her life.

Summary

At the flower shop, Allysa complains that Lily has banned them from returning to Atlas’s restaurant because it would be unfair to Ryle. Lily insists they need to respect Ryle’s feelings. Ryle texts Lily during his surgery to say that everything is going well and his hand is steady, which relieves Lily, and Lily then finds an inquiry from the Boston Globe about writing an article on the shop.

Allysa interrupts Lily to reveal that Atlas has come to the shop asking for Lily. Allysa teases Lily about Atlas’s looks and jokingly offers Atlas a job, but Lily brings Atlas into her office. Lily expects conflict after the restaurant fight, but Atlas instead admires the shop and gives Lily a wrapped gift he says he bought three years earlier in case he ever ran into her.

Atlas explains that he came to apologize, not for confronting Ryle, but for telling Lily she reminded him of her mother. Lily insists there was nothing to defend her from, while Atlas’s concern makes Lily feel judged and emotionally exposed. Atlas writes his phone number on a note, hides it inside Lily’s phone case, and tells Lily to keep it there in case she ever needs it; Lily says she will not.

Before Atlas leaves, Lily stops him to clarify that she never told Ryle their past intimacy was a pity-driven mistake. Atlas replies that he knows it was not, because he was there, then leaves. Lily is so shaken that she misses her chair and falls, and Allysa checks on her before agreeing without prompting that Ryle does not need to know about Atlas’s visit.

After Allysa leaves, Lily opens Atlas’s old gift and discovers a signed Ellen DeGeneres book. The inscription says, “Atlas says keep swimming,” a private reference to their past, and Lily is overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness of the gesture.
