Capítulo 12

Overview

Lily’s flower shop opens to immediate success, confirming her sense that creative floral design is her true path and forcing her to recognize she will need more help. The celebration afterward deepens her bond with Allysa and Marshall when Allysa reveals her pregnancy, while Ryle’s family history gains a painful new layer with the mention of a deceased older brother. Ryle also publicly claims the role of Lily’s boyfriend, making their relationship feel more secure and serious.

Summary

On the morning of the flower shop’s grand opening, Lily and Allysa prepare the store’s central display: a steampunk bouquet made with dyed roses, metal gears, washers, leather, and a repurposed pair of boots as a vase. Lily feels certain that creating unusual floral designs is what she is meant to do, and the shop opens early.

The day is much busier than Lily and Allysa expected. Phone, internet, and walk-in orders keep them from taking a lunch break, and Allysa repeatedly tells Lily that she needs more employees. By closing time, both women are exhausted but thrilled, and the steampunk bouquet has inspired multiple pre-orders. Lily is disappointed that Ryle has not appeared or texted, but he arrives just after closing, apologizes, and helps clean up.

Marshall arrives with cat-covered onesies for everyone to wear to a Bruins game promotion offering free beer. At the bar, Allysa refuses alcohol, and Marshall’s jokes about getting her pregnant accidentally lead to the reveal that Allysa is already pregnant. Marshall joyfully announces that he is going to be a father, Ryle is visibly moved, and the group celebrates before sharing stories from Allysa, Marshall, and Ryle’s youth.

While recounting the past, Allysa mentions that there were three children in three years, which prompts Lily to ask about another sibling. Ryle reveals that he and Allysa had an older brother who died when they were children. The admission briefly darkens the evening, but Marshall redirects the conversation, and the group finishes the night happily. Before Allysa leaves, Lily gives her the steampunk bouquet as a gesture of friendship, and Allysa says she hopes Ryle marries Lily someday so they can become sisters.

Back at Lily’s apartment, Ryle’s affection turns more serious when Lucy, who is moving out, asks who he is and Ryle confidently introduces himself as Lily’s boyfriend. Lily is delighted by the label, and Ryle frames it as the end of the trial period and the start of something secure. After Lucy leaves, Lily and Ryle drink wine, flirt, and move into an intimate encounter, ending the chapter with Lily feeling that the day has been nearly perfect.
