Capítulo 26

Overview

Lily spends the day at Atlas’s apartment trying to process Ryle’s attack, Lily’s pregnancy, and the loss of joy that should have accompanied the news. Atlas provides food, calm, and emotional safety, but Atlas’s presence also forces Lily to confront Lily’s unresolved attachment to Atlas and the way Ryle used that attachment as fuel for his jealousy.

The chapter deepens Lily’s internal conflict: Lily briefly starts blaming herself and Atlas for Ryle’s violence, then recognizes that there is no excuse for what Ryle did. By deciding to stay with Atlas a little longer, Lily gains a temporary refuge before facing the larger decisions about Ryle, Lily’s marriage, and Lily’s baby.

Summary

Lily lies in Atlas’s guest room, overwhelmed by alternating waves of grief, anger, tears, exhaustion, and brief love for the baby she has just learned she is carrying. Thinking about the child’s future brings warmth, but thoughts of Ryle quickly turn that joy into anger because Lily feels Ryle stole the happiness she should have felt about her pregnancy.

Lily showers after spending most of the day hidden in the room. Lily feels guilty and ashamed for taking refuge with Atlas because Ryle’s anger centered on Atlas, yet Lily also knows Atlas’s home is the safest place available. Lily believes Ryle could find Lily at her mother’s, Allysa’s, Lucy’s, or Devin’s, while Atlas’s home is less obvious and protected by an alarm system.

Lily checks Lily’s phone, ignores Ryle’s missed texts, and reads Allysa’s message saying Allysa and baby Rylee are going home from the hospital. The photo makes Lily smile and then cry. After regaining composure, Lily joins Atlas in the living room, asks for food, and Atlas immediately makes pasta for Lily.

Lily and Atlas watch several recorded episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Lily laughs for the first time since the attack. When the heaviness returns, Lily leans into Atlas, and Atlas silently comforts Lily the way he did when they were teenagers. Lily apologizes for getting angry at Atlas at the restaurant, admitting Atlas was right about Ryle, but Atlas says being right about Ryle was never what Atlas wanted.

Atlas’s comfort makes Lily reflect on how hard it has been to let Atlas go. Lily thinks about Ryle’s anger over Atlas’s phone number, the magnet, the article, Lily’s journals, and Lily’s tattoo, then catches herself trying to blame Ryle’s violence on Lily’s unfinished feelings for Atlas. Lily rejects that thought, reminding herself there is no excuse for Ryle’s actions, but the confusion leaves Lily needing to end the conversation.

When Atlas asks whether Lily will still be at the apartment when Atlas returns the next day, Lily first assumes Atlas wants Lily to leave. Atlas clarifies that Atlas wants Lily to stay as long as needed. Lily says Lily must go to work briefly the next day, but asks to stay for a few more days, and Atlas reassures Lily that Atlas prefers that arrangement. Lily returns to the guest room grateful for the temporary safety and emotional buffer Atlas provides.
