Chapter 29: One Month Before the Trivia Night

Overview

Jane's evening shifts from a rare moment of emotional and bodily recovery into panic when Jane realizes Ziggy's family tree project is due the next day. The crisis exposes Jane's exhaustion, guilt, and fear of failing Ziggy, while Ziggy's tantrum pushes Jane into a frightening loss of control.

Madeline's arrival with cardboard turns a practical school problem into an emotional lifeline, reinforcing Madeline's role as Jane's support amid Jane's isolation and trauma.

Summary

One month before trivia night, Jane sits on the bathroom floor while Ziggy takes a long bubble bath. Ziggy insists his family tree project is due the next day, but Jane confidently tells him it is not due until the following week.

While Ziggy plays noisily, Jane reads the novel Madeline chose for book club and unexpectedly feels a faint sexual response. A traumatic memory briefly intrudes, but Jane angrily resists it by reminding herself that she has other, ordinary memories of sex and of feeling attractive.

Jane checks the school notice and realizes Ziggy was right: the family tree project is due tomorrow. Because Ziggy hates drawing attention to himself and Jane needs him at school so she can meet work deadlines, Jane decides they must complete it immediately, despite it being past his bedtime. Jane texts Madeline in a panic asking for cardboard, then receives a call from Pete the Plumber reminding Jane that she has forgotten his payroll.

Jane tries to rush Ziggy out of the bath, but Jane's urgency collides with Ziggy's need to control the bath routine. When Jane pulls the plug herself, Ziggy erupts in anger, slips while grabbing for it, and Jane catches him roughly. Their conflict escalates until Ziggy screams that he hates Jane, and Jane loses control and screams back at him.

Ziggy is frightened by Jane's outburst, and Jane is immediately consumed by guilt. Jane apologizes, Ziggy clings to Jane, and the moment passes for him almost instantly. Then someone buzzes the apartment: Madeline has come in person with yellow cardboard. Jane opens the door, sees Madeline's cheerful help, and bursts into tears.
