Half an hour before trivia night, Celeste finishes dressing as Audrey Hepburn in a black dress, white gloves, pearls, and an elaborate hairstyle. Josh compliments her, and Celeste, softened by the moment and numbed by painkillers, invites him into a long cuddle.

Josh says he has a secret that makes him sad. After hesitating, Josh tells Celeste that Max is no longer hurting Amabella but has instead been pushing Skye down the stairs near the library when no one else is watching. Celeste is sickened by the revelation, especially because Skye is already fragile and anxious.

Celeste tries to understand what Josh means and realizes that Max was the child bullying Amabella all along. The knowledge forces Celeste to confront what Susi had warned her about: Perry's violence has affected the children despite Celeste's insistence that it had not. Celeste sees Max's sweet, innocent appearance in painful contrast to the harm he is causing.
