Chapter 76

Overview

Perry’s identity as Jane’s “Saxon Banks” is confirmed when Celeste remembers Perry once used his cousin’s name as a false identity. Jane’s hidden reason for moving to Pirriwee is revealed: she had partly hoped to find the man who assaulted her and make him see Ziggy.

Perry’s public violence destroys the secrecy around Celeste’s abuse, and Bonnie’s rage turns the confrontation into the balcony incident at the center of the police investigation. Her shove makes Perry fall, sharply escalating the night from exposure to catastrophe.

Summary

When Jane names “Saxon Banks,” Perry initially does not recognize Jane, which makes clear that Jane was insignificant to Perry and likely one of many women he harmed. Perry reacts only because Perry understands what Jane represents. Jane tells Perry that Jane moved to Pirriwee partly because Jane thought Perry might be there.

Celeste then remembers an old wedding anecdote: Perry once stole something as a boy and falsely gave the name “Saxon Banks,” his cousin’s name. The memory confirms that Perry could have used that name with Jane. Perry tells Celeste that the incident with Jane meant nothing, but Celeste realizes Perry is treating Jane’s trauma as a mere infidelity problem.

Jane recalls the hotel room where Perry, using the name Saxon, had a real estate leaflet for a Pirriwee house. Jane remembers asking about children, misreading Perry’s sadness as romantic vulnerability, and later moving to Pirriwee while pretending the move was impulsive. Jane admits to herself that, in a conflicted and painful way, Jane had wanted Perry to see Ziggy and recognize his son.

Celeste sees that Perry refuses even to look at Jane and understands a deeper cruelty in Perry than Celeste had allowed herself to believe. When Perry tries to move the discussion home and avoid a public scene, Celeste throws her drink in Perry’s face. Perry instantly hits Celeste with the back of his hand, knocking Celeste across the balcony.

Madeline rushes to Celeste, Ed steps between Perry and the others, Jane drops and breaks her glass, and Renata begins calling the police. Bonnie breaks free from Nathan, accuses Perry of having done this before, and links Perry’s violence to Max hurting girls. When Perry denies that his children have seen anything, Bonnie screams that people do see, shoves Perry with both hands, and Perry falls.
