Chapter 71
Overview
On the way to trivia night, Celeste and Perry confront the collapse of their private life behind their polished public image. Celeste tells Perry that Max has been bullying Amabella, forcing both parents to face how Perry’s violence has affected their sons.
Perry promises to get help and tries to keep Celeste from leaving, but Celeste understands that protecting the boys now means ending the marriage. Their raw confrontation is abruptly interrupted by Renata, bringing them back into the public performance of the school event.
Summary
Celeste and Perry drive to the school trivia night in silence after Perry has discovered Celeste’s secret apartment. Celeste reflects that, despite violence and crisis, they are still keeping up appearances: Perry has already posted a costumed Facebook photo, preserving the public image of a fun, community-minded couple.
As they sit parked outside the school, Celeste tells Perry that Max has been bullying Amabella and that Ziggy has been wrongly blamed. Perry says they will speak to the teachers, but Celeste reminds him he will be away and says she will handle it. When Perry says he will talk to Max before leaving, Celeste challenges him by asking whether he will tell Max that bullying is not how to treat a woman.
Celeste’s question breaks the silence around Perry’s violence. She tells Perry that the boys have witnessed his abuse, including Max standing in the doorway during a previous incident. Perry tries to stop the conversation, but Celeste presses the point, forcing him to acknowledge what the children have seen and absorbed.
Perry then asks about the apartment. Celeste confirms she has leased it, plans to leave the next week, and will take the boys. Perry breaks down crying and promises to get help, saying he once sought a referral from Dr. Hunter for anxiety and meant to tell a psychiatrist the truth. Celeste recognizes his familiar cycle of remorse but no longer believes it will change.
Celeste realizes Josh’s revelation about Max has shifted everything: the boys, once her reason to stay, are now her reason to leave. She sees that violence has become normalized in their home and even in her own reactions. Celeste tells Perry it is over, but as Perry begins bargaining, Renata suddenly appears at the car window with her husband and cheerfully interrupts, inviting them to share an umbrella.
