Chapter 67
Overview
Madeline and Ed’s panic over Abigail’s virginity-auction website is resolved when Abigail takes it down after receiving an offer from Larry Fitzgerald to donate $100,000 to Amnesty International. The offer lets Abigail back away from her public stunt while preserving her sense of purpose and pride.
The chapter shifts the family crisis from confrontation to relief, while also hinting that the convenient rescue may not be accidental. Madeline’s final suspicion suggests someone may have intervened behind the scenes.
Summary
On a rainy day, Madeline and Ed sit at the living room table eating Jane’s muffins and worrying about Abigail’s still-active website auctioning her virginity. Abigail remains in her room and refuses to give them the password or remove the site, insisting that the project is about raising awareness rather than sex.
Madeline recalls that Nathan came over the previous night and joined her in pleading, arguing, and crying with Abigail for more than two hours. Abigail still would not budge, claiming she is the only voice for exploited girls and dismissing the sexual comments from strangers as irrelevant Internet cruelty.
Ed proposes contacting Amnesty International’s Australian office because Abigail might listen if the organization itself objects to being associated with the auction. Before they can act, Fred and Chloe burst in fighting over a paper airplane, and Madeline, overwhelmed, tears the paper in half and sends them away.
Abigail then appears and announces that she has taken the website down. She shows Madeline and Ed an email from Larry Fitzgerald, an eighty-three-year-old widower in South Dakota, who praises her intentions but offers to donate $100,000 to Amnesty International if she immediately closes the auction. Abigail says the donation seems large enough to help and that she will put the site back up if Larry does not send proof.
Madeline and Ed carefully contain their relief while recognizing that Larry’s offer has given Abigail a way to retreat without admitting defeat. Abigail relaxes, eats leftover spaghetti Bolognese despite her vegan phase, and reveals that her password was “You’ll never guess.” Madeline mentions that consequences will still be necessary, but Abigail cheerfully accepts this and goes to watch television.
After Abigail leaves, Ed declares the crisis averted. Madeline thanks the mysterious Larry Fitzgerald, then stops as she begins to wonder whether the timing and nature of the email were really just luck.
