Chapter 26

Overview

Celeste’s attempt to function normally at the school athletics carnival is undercut by a flashback to Perry’s latest assault, revealing how she blames herself and minimizes the danger. At the mothers race, Madeline appears to beat Bonnie, but Renata’s spiteful insistence that Bonnie won turns the finish into another small social battle.

Madeline chooses to hand Bonnie the victory, a pointed concession that acknowledges their rivalry and her conflict with Nathan’s new family. The police-interview comments afterward suggest the race became part of the community’s gossip, though not an obvious explanation for the eventual death.

Summary

Celeste stands with Renata holding the finishing tape for the school mothers race, but Celeste is distracted by the previous night’s violence. Renata asks about Perry, and Celeste answers that Perry is great, while privately remembering how an argument over the twins’ Legos escalated.

After Perry criticized Celeste for letting the boys leave toys everywhere, Celeste snapped that Perry could pick them up himself. Perry calmly gathered the Legos, then dumped the whole box over Celeste’s head. Celeste threw pieces back at Perry, and Perry slapped Celeste across the face; Celeste scratched Perry and hurt her knee against the coffee table before Perry went to bed and Celeste cleaned up alone.

The next morning, Perry acted cheerful and casual. When Josh noticed the scratch on Perry’s neck, Perry joked that he had walked into a tree, treating the violence as an ordinary marital secret. Celeste, with a tender lip and sore knee, wonders whether Perry is right that their relationship is not normal because it is more passionate and intense.

The starter gun brings Celeste back to the athletics carnival. Celeste has told Max and Josh she cannot run because she fell down the stairs, and Josh’s quiet reply suggests he may sense more than he says. As the women race toward the tape, Bonnie and Madeline lead, and Celeste believes Madeline crosses first.

After the finish, Renata insists Bonnie won, while Bonnie, Madeline, and Celeste all indicate Madeline probably came first. Madeline recognizes Renata’s pettiness but deliberately gives Bonnie the winner’s ribbon, telling Bonnie she won fair and square. Later parent comments frame the incident as comic rivalry rather than a likely cause of murder, while also noting Juliette’s forgotten presence in the race.
