Chapter 42

Overview

While Perry is away, Celeste’s babysitter Gwen notices a bruise that Celeste tries to hide and explain away as a tennis injury. Gwen’s sharp response suggests that another person outside Celeste’s closest circle may recognize the signs of abuse, increasing the pressure on Celeste’s private crisis.

Summary

With Perry away on an overseas trip, Celeste prepares to leave the house while Gwen, the longtime babysitter, sits with her knitting after the boys have fallen asleep. Celeste explains that she is going to a new book club and expects not to be late, while Gwen chats casually about her own book club.

As Celeste reaches for her phone, Gwen notices a bruise on Celeste’s wrist. Celeste immediately pulls down her sleeve and claims it is a tennis injury caused when Celeste and Celeste’s doubles partner both went for the same shot.

Gwen looks at Celeste steadily and advises that it may be time to find another tennis partner, making clear that Gwen suspects the injury is not accidental. Celeste instinctively minimizes the situation by saying it was partly Celeste’s fault, but Gwen rejects that idea. Celeste ends the conversation and leaves, unsettled by Gwen’s pointed concern.
