Madeline is stuck listening to Year 2 parents discuss a bathroom renovation while watching Celeste and Jane laugh on the balcony with Bonnie and Nathan. Jealous of being excluded from her friends, Madeline recruits Samantha to replace her in the conversation and heads toward the balcony.

On the way, Madeline overhears a group of Blond Bobs gossiping cruelly about Jane, Ziggy, Renata’s nanny, and the bullying petition. Angered by their assumptions and malice, Madeline tells them they are awful people and continues outside, where Renata joins her for fresh air. The two women soften toward each other over the previous day’s car accident, with Renata admitting she lashes out when frightened.

On the balcony, Nathan drunkenly celebrates the resolution of Abigail’s website crisis, and Madeline deduces that Celeste is the anonymous “Larry Fitzgerald of South Dakota” who donated one hundred thousand dollars to Amnesty International. Celeste denies it, but her composed denial convinces Madeline further. Renata then reveals she has stirred up trouble inside by exposing Juliette’s affairs with wealthy Pirriwee men.

Celeste decides to tell Renata the truth: Max, not Ziggy, was hurting Amabella. Renata struggles to accept it, then realizes Amabella had resisted inviting the twins to her party. Renata apologizes directly to Jane and Ziggy, and Jane accepts the apology.

Ed and Perry arrive on the balcony as tensions inside rise. Nathan blurts out the news of Celeste’s large donation, which Perry had not known about. Perry reacts by making pointed remarks about Celeste’s secrecy, lack of income, and spending, and Madeline suddenly sees his behavior in a new light, sensing that the image of Celeste’s perfect marriage may have hidden something frightening.

As Perry sits at the center of the group, Jane quietly tells him she thinks they have met before. Perry denies remembering her, but Jane insists and says he gave his name as Saxon Banks.
