Chapter 72

Overview

Celeste and Perry enter the trivia night looking perfect, heightening the contrast between their public image and the private rupture already underway. Madeline, increasingly drunk and resentful, turns her unresolved anger over Nathan and Abigail onto Bonnie, exposing old wounds beneath social politeness.

The delayed event and flowing cocktails add to the disorder, while a drink spilled on Madeline becomes another disputed incident in the night’s growing chaos. The conflicting witness accounts reinforce how unstable and unreliable the community’s version of events will be.

Summary

Madeline watches Perry and Celeste arrive at the trivia night and thinks they look impossibly polished, like real celebrities among costumed guests. Celeste’s beauty draws admiration, including from Bonnie, who joins Madeline while Tom and Jane drift away together, clearly attracted to each other.

Madeline, drunk and emotionally raw, becomes irritated by Bonnie’s casual appearance and by the thought that Abigail admires Bonnie more than her. Madeline asks about Skye, then pointedly brings up Abigail’s website project and her connection with Bonnie’s mother, knowing she is being cruel but feeling freed by alcohol.

A harried Blond Bob explains that the trivia contest is delayed because the caterer and MC, Brett Larson, are stuck in traffic with the questions and presentation. Madeline notices Ed talking with Renata’s husband and remembers gossip about Renata’s husband and the French nanny, which makes Madeline briefly feel guilty about her earlier fight with Renata.

Madeline continues needling Bonnie, joking that Ed should not pick up adulterous ideas and then attacking Nathan for leaving Madeline with a newborn. Bonnie, also tipsy, tells Madeline that Nathan did something terrible but still suffers for it, and suggests that Madeline might benefit from forgiving him.

Before Bonnie can explain her own experience with forgiveness, a nearby commotion causes someone to bump her. Bonnie’s cocktail spills down Madeline’s pink dress. Later witness accounts contradict one another about the cause of the collision, with one witness insisting Bonnie deliberately threw the drink.
