Chapter 21
Overview
Celeste and Jane begin to form a tentative friendship at school pickup, bonding over work, motherhood, and a plan to walk together while their children are in class. The chapter also hints, through a later witness statement, that their relationship will become tied to a painful apology on trivia night.
Madeline escalates the conflict over Amabella’s party by accepting free Disney On Ice tickets scheduled at the same time, creating a rival attraction for the school parents. The police commentary frames these social maneuvers as more than gossip, suggesting that small parental feuds may connect to the eventual death.
Summary
Celeste arrives early for school pickup, longing for the affectionate moment when her twin sons will rush to her, while also anticipating that she will soon be shouting at them. She thinks about their poor sleep, her own guilt, and the way the boys obey Perry more easily than they obey her, concluding that Perry is a good father and usually a good husband.
Jane joins Celeste, and the two women walk together toward the school. Celeste imagines Jane’s life with Ziggy as simple and calm, then asks about Jane’s day and work. Their conversation turns to careers: Celeste says she used to be a lawyer, while Jane says she was once meant to become one, with a sadness Celeste cannot interpret.
Celeste explains that she cannot imagine returning to legal practice while raising the twins and awkwardly says she is lucky not to need paid work because Perry is a hedge fund manager. Jane mentions wanting to exercise while Ziggy is at school, and Celeste suggests that they walk together around the headland, which Jane accepts with shy pleasure, marking the beginning of a closer friendship.
A later witness statement from Harper complicates that friendship by recalling that, shortly before the trivia-night death, Harper overheard Celeste apologizing urgently to Jane on a balcony. The comment hints that something serious eventually strains or alters the relationship between the two women.
Meanwhile, Madeline receives a call from her boss, Samira, about theatre marketing and is offered complimentary front-row Disney On Ice tickets. When Madeline realizes the tickets are for the exact date and time of Amabella’s party—the party Renata excluded Ziggy from—Madeline accepts them, effectively turning her boycott into a more tempting rival event.
Parent interview snippets show the fallout: some parents view Madeline’s ticket giveaway as a social power move, others take the tickets despite knowing they conflict with Amabella’s party, and Bonnie says she attended Amabella’s party instead. Detective-Sergeant Adrian Quinlan frames these petty school disputes as potentially relevant because trivial conflicts can escalate into violence.
