Chapter 68

Overview

Jane goes to Blue Blues before trivia night and discovers that Tom, whom Jane believed was gay, is actually straight. The misunderstanding reframes Jane’s long-standing comfort with Tom as possible romantic attraction, creating a sudden emotional shift just before the school event.

The chapter also shows how quickly the Pirriwee community misreads and gossips about intimacy, as later comments confuse Tom’s identity and Jane’s interaction with him.

Summary

On the rainy evening of the school trivia night, Jane arrives at Blue Blues soaking wet and finds the café unexpectedly closed. Tom opens the door anyway, tells Jane he is “open for you,” and invites Jane inside to dry off before the event.

Tom brings Jane into his studio apartment behind the café, a private space Jane has never seen before. Jane notices Tom’s unfinished two-thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle and is delighted because Jane’s family also loves jigsaws. Tom gives Jane dry clothes, serves pumpkin soup and bread, and the familiar comfort of food, warmth, and the puzzle makes Jane feel happy and cared for.

While they eat and work on the puzzle, Tom finally notices Jane’s haircut. Jane jokes that a gay man should have noticed it immediately, assuming Tom is gay because Madeline once told Jane a story about “Tom” having a boyfriend. Tom corrects Jane: Madeline meant Tom O’Brien, the smash-repair man, not Tom the barista.

The revelation changes Jane’s understanding of her intimacy with Tom. Jane realizes she has been unusually unguarded with Tom because Jane believed Tom was unavailable, and Jane becomes embarrassed about having changed with the bathroom door partly open and having let herself feel attracted to Tom. Tom is not offended, but both Jane and Tom blush, and their familiar friendship suddenly becomes charged with mutual awareness.

In a later witness-style comment, Carol says she saw Jane in an intimate conversation with a man at trivia night and thought the man had a hand on Jane’s knee. Gabrielle dismisses the concern by saying it was only Tom the barista and repeating the mistaken belief that Tom is gay.
