Chapter 74

Overview

Celeste privately tells Jane that Max, not Ziggy, bullied Amabella, but Jane already knows and refuses to blame Celeste. Celeste also apologizes to Bonnie and Nathan about Max hurting Skye, and their calm, forgiving response briefly softens the night’s tension.

Meanwhile, Celeste’s fear of Perry deepens as she recognizes his drinking and mood shift as signs of danger after he discovered her escape plan. The police note at the end raises the stakes by revealing that the balcony will be the scene of the fatal incident and that eight witnesses know the truth.

Summary

Celeste asks Jane to step onto the balcony for air, escaping the overheated, noisy trivia night. Celeste is physically uncomfortable and increasingly afraid because Perry, though charming inside with Ed, is drinking heavily and showing signs of the dangerous mood Celeste knows well. Celeste believes Perry will later focus on her secret apartment as a betrayal and punish her for planning to leave.

On the rainy balcony, Celeste tells Jane that Josh revealed Max, not Ziggy, has been bullying Amabella. Celeste apologizes repeatedly and says she intends to tell Renata, Miss Barnes, Mrs. Lipmann, and possibly everyone at the party that Ziggy was wrongly blamed. Jane says Ziggy already told her after Amabella confided in him, and Jane tries to reassure Celeste that the situation is not Celeste’s fault.

Nathan and Bonnie join Celeste and Jane outside. Remembering that Josh also said Max pushed Skye down the stairs, Celeste apologetically tells them that Max may have been bullying their daughter too. Bonnie calmly says Skye already told her, and Nathan explains that they emailed Miss Barnes so the teacher could monitor the situation rather than confronting Celeste directly.

Nathan and Bonnie respond with unexpected kindness, framing the children’s behavior as part of learning how to grow up. Their gentle reaction contrasts with the panic and blame surrounding Ziggy earlier, and the group briefly laughs over familiar sayings about sharing and kindness. A police interview note then reveals that eight people, including the eventual victim, were on the balcony at the time of the incident, and that the witnesses know what they saw.
