Chapter 5
Overview
Celeste joins Madeline and Jane at Blue Blues, where the three women begin forming the close alliance that other parents will quickly notice and resent. Madeline introduces Jane and Celeste to Pirriwee Public’s parent politics, turning school cliques, gifted programs, and social rivalries into comic gossip.
Their improvised champagne breakfast for Madeline’s fortieth leaves them giggly and conspicuously bonded when they arrive at orientation pickup. The chapter shows how a small social moment becomes ammunition in the school community’s rumor mill and helps establish the divisions that will later matter.
Summary
Celeste arrives at Blue Blues expecting to meet Madeline alone and is disappointed to find Jane there too. Celeste feels anxious in groups and worries about how she appears socially, but Madeline warmly welcomes her and introduces Jane as the new kindergarten mother who helped after Madeline twisted her ankle.
Madeline receives Celeste’s birthday gift of Waterford crystal champagne glasses and quietly checks herself before making a joke about Celeste’s wealth in front of Jane. Madeline then begins briefing Jane and Celeste on Pirriwee Public’s social world, explaining the school’s parent factions, especially the PTA mothers she calls the “Blond Bobs.”
Madeline describes figures such as Harper, Carol Quigley, Renata, Thea Cunningham, and the new stay-at-home father connected to Jackie Montgomery. Celeste repeatedly tempers Madeline’s sharper comments, while Madeline tries to entertain Jane and make her laugh. Jane says she will not get involved in school politics, but a later aside suggests this confidence will prove badly misplaced.
The conversation turns to gifted children and school privilege, prompting Madeline to recall a previous conflict with Renata over an excursion meant only for gifted students. Madeline, using her connection to the Pirriwee Peninsula Theatre, arranged for all the children to attend and turned the event into a broader social occasion for parents.
Celeste remembers she also brought Madeline a bottle of Bollinger, and Madeline pushes for an improvised champagne breakfast despite Celeste’s hesitation. The three women share a little champagne and orange juice before returning to school together, laughing and supporting Madeline as she hobbles in to see Chloe come out.
Later witness-style comments show how quickly the morning becomes gossip: some parents judge Jane as a young single mother drinking early, others dismiss it as harmless birthday fun, and Harper frames Madeline, Celeste, and Jane as an exclusive threesome from the first day. Madeline later wonders whether the champagne was a mistake, not because they were drunk, but because their visible closeness made other parents feel excluded.
