Chapter 7

Overview

Ziggy denies Amabella’s accusation, but Renata demands an apology and publicly brands him a liar. Jane refuses to make her son confess to something he says he did not do, while Madeline’s attempt to help intensifies the conflict with Renata.

The episode turns kindergarten orientation into a social battlefield, isolating Jane and Ziggy before school has even begun. Ziggy’s final remark that he no longer wants to attend school shows the accusation’s emotional impact and sets up a lasting divide among the parents.

Summary

After Amabella accuses Ziggy of choking her, Madeline immediately worries that she has befriended the mother of a violent child, but Jane is visibly shocked and insists Ziggy would never do such a thing. The other parents pull back, isolating Jane, while Madeline tries to comfort her and Celeste reacts with distress.

Jane steps into the center of the group and puts a hand on Ziggy. Miss Barnes asks Ziggy to apologize, hoping to resolve the situation, but Ziggy calmly says he did nothing. Jane asks Amabella if she is sure, while Renata presses Ziggy to say sorry and accuses him of lying when he refuses.

The confrontation hardens when Jane declares that Ziggy does not lie, and Renata insists Amabella is truthful. Miss Barnes is unable to manage the stalemate. Madeline, despite her injured ankle and frustration over her ruined birthday, intervenes on Jane’s behalf, but Renata tells her to stay out of it, exposing their existing rivalry and social tension.

Amabella, still marked on the neck and upset, says it does not matter and wants to go home, but Renata refuses to let the accusation drop. Jane says she cannot force Ziggy to apologize for something he says he did not do. Renata then leans close to Ziggy and threatens consequences if he ever touches Amabella again before leaving with Amabella and Juliette.

Once Renata leaves, the other parents avoid involvement. Ziggy tells Jane he does not think he wants to come to school anymore, showing that the accusation has immediately damaged his sense of safety at kindergarten. In the later police-interview fragment, Samantha says all the parents must give statements and admits she feels anxious and guilty even without cause.
