Chapter 48

Overview

Madeline’s sense of displacement as Abigail’s mother intensifies when she discovers Nathan has canceled Abigail’s math tutor without consulting her. Her late-night social media checking also hints at a secret online “project” involving Abigail, raising a new concern about what Abigail is doing under Nathan and Bonnie’s roof.

The chapter deepens Madeline’s resentment toward Nathan and Bonnie, showing how Abigail’s move has shifted the co-parenting balance and left Madeline feeling excluded, powerless, and volatile.

Summary

After book club, Madeline stays awake in her living room while Ed and the children sleep. She keeps remembering practical tasks she no longer handles for Abigail, such as the Friday morning math tutor, and each reminder renews her grief and anger over Abigail living with Nathan and Bonnie.

Madeline vents by swinging Fred’s toy lightsaber and mentally condemning the people she blames for her current distress: Nathan, Bonnie, Renata, Miss Barnes, and Saxon Banks. After nearly breaking a light fixture, she stops and turns to the iPad, intending to distract herself with a game.

Instead, Madeline checks Abigail’s social media, as she has been doing compulsively since Abigail moved out. Abigail has posted a radiant yoga photo, which makes Madeline feel both resentful of Bonnie’s influence and guilty for resenting something that clearly makes Abigail happy.

Madeline then notices a troubling comment from Abigail’s friend Freya about a secret “project” and whether the photo is “sexy/slutty” enough. Alarmed, Madeline messages Abigail because it is nearly midnight and Abigail should be asleep before tutoring. Abigail immediately replies that Nathan has canceled the tutor and plans to tutor Abigail himself.

Furious that Nathan made a unilateral decision about Abigail’s education, Madeline calls him at once. Nathan is initially irritated that Madeline has called at midnight, then softens when Madeline points out Abigail is still awake online. Nathan admits he should have discussed the tutor with Madeline but insists the tutor was ineffective and postpones the argument.

After Nathan hangs up, Madeline throws her phone against the wall and shatters the screen. Later interview-style comments show divided opinions: Stu sympathizes somewhat with Nathan, Gabrielle thinks living near an ex is untenable, and Bonnie defends her and Nathan’s decision to move close to Abigail.
