Chapter 2: Six Months Before the Trivia Night
Overview
Six months before the murder investigation, Madeline Mackenzie celebrates her fortieth birthday while taking Chloe to kindergarten orientation at Pirriwee Public. Her sharp humor and impulsive sense of justice lead her to confront a young driver texting behind the wheel, but the confrontation ends with Madeline injuring her ankle.
The injury is presented as the story’s true beginning, turning an ordinary school-morning errand into the first link in the events that will eventually culminate at trivia night. The chapter also introduces Pirriwee’s parent culture and Madeline’s forceful, theatrical personality.
Summary
Six months before the trivia night, Madeline Martha Mackenzie turns forty and drives her five-year-old daughter, Chloe, to Pirriwee Public for kindergarten orientation. Madeline is determined to enjoy the day with coffee, cake, birthday attention, and lunch plans, but the milestone makes her reflect uneasily on age, death, and how differently the world values youth and middle age.
On the way to school, Madeline thinks about Chloe’s confidence, her son Fred’s school routine, and the competitive parents already orbiting Pirriwee Public, including Renata and Harper. She also anticipates meeting Celeste, whose twin boys will attend orientation. The morning appears bright and celebratory, reinforced by Madeline’s new stilettos and Ed’s affectionate declaration of the “Festival of Madeline.”
Madeline’s mood shifts when she notices a young woman driving a crowded blue Mitsubishi while using a mobile phone. Alarmed by the danger of texting while driving, Madeline lectures Chloe about road safety, only for Chloe to point out Madeline’s own past hypocrisy. Their conversation reveals Madeline’s dramatic, comic parenting style and Chloe’s sharp, precocious manner.
At a red light, Madeline honks at the young driver and demands that the girl put down the phone. When the girl responds rudely, Madeline stops her own car, gets out, confronts the driver, grabs the phone, and tosses it to the passenger. The teenagers laugh at Madeline, but Madeline feels energized by the confrontation and returns toward her SUV.
As Madeline hurries back in her new stilettos, her ankle twists badly and she falls. The chapter closes by framing this awkward injury as the likely beginning of the larger story, connecting Madeline’s impulsive intervention and her birthday morning to the chain of events that will lead toward the trivia-night tragedy.
