Chapter 58
Overview
Jane brings Ziggy to Blue Blues after a psychologist visit and seriously considers leaving Pirriwee to escape the accusations against him. A conversation with Ziggy reveals that he is not Amabella’s bully and that Amabella has made him keep the real child’s identity secret out of fear.
Harper’s husband tries to intimidate Jane, but Tom steps in and defends her, underscoring the real friendships Jane has built in Pirriwee. The chapter ends with a major revelation: Ziggy identifies Max, “the mean twin,” as the child hurting Amabella.
Summary
After visiting the psychologist, Jane takes Ziggy to Blue Blues for morning tea before returning him to school. Tom offers them free apple pancakes, and Jane feels embarrassed by his generosity while thinking about how much she will miss Pirriwee if she and Ziggy leave.
Jane considers moving when her lease comes up, believing a new school might let Ziggy escape the accusations and the parents’ petition against him. She also reflects that coming to Pirriwee has helped her see Saxon Banks more clearly: not as a monster, but as an ordinary cruel man, and possibly as someone she can one day describe to Ziggy without making him seem like a terrifying figure.
When Jane asks Ziggy if he wants to change schools, Ziggy says no because he still has friends, including Amabella. This surprises Jane, and Ziggy explains that he and Amabella sit under the Sea Dragon Tree and talk about Star Wars. When Jane presses him, Ziggy says he is not the one hurting Amabella, then admits he knows who is but promised Amabella not to tell because she fears she will be “killed dead.”
Jane suggests Ziggy write the name down instead of saying it aloud. Before he can do so, Harper arrives with her husband, Graeme, who confronts Jane and threatens legal action if Jane goes near Harper again. Tom intervenes firmly, orders Graeme and Harper to leave, and protects Jane and Ziggy from further harassment.
After the confrontation, Jane realizes she loves Tom, Madeline, and Celeste and that leaving Pirriwee would break her heart, though she still believes staying may be impossible. Ziggy then hands Jane the notebook. Jane reads the name he has written as “Maks,” realizes he means Max, and Ziggy confirms it is “the mean twin.”
