Chapter 52
Overview
At the school assembly, the community's division over the Ziggy-Amabella accusations is visible in the parents' seating, while Madeline is forced into another tense encounter with Bonnie. Bonnie's comments about Abigail's education, values, and birthday plans deepen Madeline's fear that she is losing her daughter to Nathan and Bonnie's household. The chapter shifts Madeline's conflict from public school politics back to private maternal grief and resentment.
Summary
At a Pirriwee Public School assembly the day before trivia night, Samantha observes that the parents have physically divided into Renata supporters and Madeline supporters, reflecting how far the Ziggy-Amabella conflict has split the school community.
Madeline attends the assembly with Ed and feels irritable, anticipating worse PMS by trivia night. Bonnie takes the empty seat beside Madeline, and Ed quietly places a reassuring hand on Madeline's knee as Madeline struggles to remain civil with the woman she resents for sharing Abigail's daily life.
Bonnie raises Nathan's failure to tell Madeline about canceling Abigail's math tutor, but Madeline is uncomfortable discussing family matters in public. Bonnie then says Abigail is developing a social conscience and may be interested in social work rather than physiotherapy, which alarms Madeline because Madeline believes Abigail is too vulnerable for that career and fears Bonnie is reshaping Abigail into someone unrecognizable.
As Mrs. Lipmann prepares to begin the assembly, Bonnie invites Madeline, Ed, and the children to Abigail's fifteenth-birthday dinner at Bonnie and Nathan's house. Madeline is devastated by the implication that she will be a guest, not the host, at her own daughter's birthday, but she hides her pain and politely asks what she can bring.
