Chapter 23

Overview

Madeline’s Disney On Ice boycott succeeds as a joyful outing for the children, but it deepens the social divide caused by Amabella’s party. Celeste’s private crisis intensifies when she clearly acknowledges Perry’s abuse and briefly resolves to leave him. Jane’s accidental loss of Harry the Hippo turns a small mistake into new school gossip, exposing how closely the parents police one another’s actions.

Summary

Madeline brings Chloe, Ziggy, Jane, Celeste, the twins, and other children to Disney On Ice, hoping the outing will justify the rift she has caused with Renata over Amabella’s party. Madeline reminds herself that Ziggy’s exclusion is the reason for the boycott, though doubts about the bullying accusation still linger in her mind.

Before the show, Jane mentions the stress of hosting Harry the Hippo, the kindergarten class toy that must be returned with a scrapbook and photos. Celeste looks pale and exhausted while trying to control Josh and Max. As the show begins and the children become absorbed, Madeline notices that every parent is watching their child’s delight except Celeste, who is withdrawn and distressed.

Celeste’s thoughts turn sharply to Perry’s violence. The realization that her husband hits her breaks through her rationalizations, and Celeste tells herself that she must leave him immediately. Even then, practical concerns about the boys being tired and difficult begin to interfere with that decision.

Later, Jane talks with her mother about the show and Ziggy’s enjoyment, then learns that her old boyfriend Zach is engaged. Jane’s mother hints that Ruth Sullivan may have noticed a resemblance between Ziggy and Zach, but Jane firmly says Zach is not Ziggy’s father. While talking, Jane searches the apartment and realizes that Harry the Hippo is missing.

Jane calls Madeline in tears, initially making Madeline fear that Ziggy has been lost. Jane explains that Harry the Hippo was left behind at the venue during the confusion of Josh’s nosebleed. Later parent commentary shows the loss becomes school gossip, especially because Jane’s scrapbook photos document the Disney On Ice group and highlight which children were excluded.
