Chapter 34
Overview
Madeline tells Ed Jane’s story, and a careless remark from Ed sparks a fight about victim-blaming, women’s vulnerability, and Madeline’s own anxieties about her daughters. Afterward, Madeline breaks her promise to Jane by googling Saxon Banks and discovers he appears to be a married Melbourne property developer with three daughters.
The chapter shifts Madeline from protective outrage to self-reproach, as she recognizes both her intrusion into Jane’s private trauma and her helplessness to protect her own children from harm.
Summary
The night after visiting Jane, Madeline lies in bed with Ed and researches erotic asphyxiation because Jane’s account has stayed in her mind all day. Ed jokes that he is willing to try it, but Madeline is alarmed and explains the danger, while their banter briefly turns to Ed’s past experience with a woman who requested it.
Madeline then tells Ed what Jane said about Saxon Banks. Ed reacts with anger toward Saxon but calls Jane a “silly girl,” which enrages Madeline because it sounds like victim-blaming. Madeline argues that Ed is applying a double standard to women’s sexuality and imagines how devastating such judgment would be if directed at Abigail or Chloe.
The argument escalates even though Madeline knows Ed does not truly blame Jane. Madeline’s anger is tied to deeper resentment about Abigail moving in with Nathan and Bonnie, because Madeline suspects Ed’s earlier dismissive reaction may have pushed Abigail away. Madeline leaves the bedroom and goes downstairs rather than stay beside Ed.
Alone with chamomile tea, Madeline thinks about how much unwanted information Abigail gives her about Nathan and Bonnie, and how Ed now assumes the worst of Abigail. Madeline reflects on her nostalgia for the time when she and Abigail were alone together, guiltily imagining Ed, Fred, and Chloe as intruders into that earlier life.
Madeline’s thoughts return to Saxon Banks, and despite Jane’s explicit plea not to search for him, Madeline googles him. She finds a corporate profile of a Melbourne property developer named Saxon Banks, studies his photo, and reads that he has a wife and three young daughters. The discovery makes Madeline realize Ziggy has three half sisters and that she now knows something about Ziggy that Jane does not.
Madeline is overcome by guilt for violating Jane’s privacy and recognizes that her outrage may partly come from a superior, voyeuristic position. A scream from Chloe interrupts her spiral, and Madeline runs to comfort her, relieved to face a childhood nightmare she can fix when so many other dangers to her children are beyond her control.
