Chapter 15

Overview

Jane’s visit to Madeline’s home deepens her longing to give Ziggy a secure, ordinary childhood, while also bringing her close to revealing the traumatic source of her doubts about him. The visit exposes Madeline’s painful tension with Abigail, who asserts independence by choosing to stay with her father and Bonnie.

Ed’s affectionate presence and the story of his long love for Madeline emphasize the warmth of Madeline’s household, making Jane feel even more isolated. The brief police-interview commentary keeps the future trivia-night conflict in view and raises uncertainty about whether the school dispute is the true cause.

Summary

Jane and Ziggy arrive at Madeline’s house for a playdate, carrying homemade banana muffins. As Ziggy admires the two-story family home, Jane sees in it the ordinary childhood she wants for him. The sight makes Jane think about the life she might have had if she had not gone out on the night tied to her trauma, though she also recognizes that without that night Ziggy would not exist.

Chloe joyfully pulls Ziggy away to play, and Madeline welcomes Jane inside. Jane observes Madeline’s lively, messy home and contrasts it with her own life. Over tea, Jane tells Madeline that Harper appeared to avoid her at a gas station, likely because of Amabella’s accusation against Ziggy at kindergarten orientation.

Madeline reacts protectively and jokes about confronting Harper, but Jane stops her. Jane insists she would have made Ziggy apologize if she believed he had hurt Amabella, then admits inwardly that her certainty is not complete. Jane nearly tells Madeline the story behind her small doubt, hoping Madeline might reassure her, but Jane decides that showing doubt would feel like betraying Ziggy.

Abigail enters and announces that her father is picking her up so she can stay at his and Bonnie’s house before an early commitment. Madeline is upset that Abigail arranged this without asking her. Abigail angrily objects to being treated like something her parents take turns owning, then leaves despite Madeline’s protest.

Ed and Fred return from surfing, and Ed comforts Madeline as Fred eats Jane’s muffins. After Madeline leaves briefly to help Chloe, Ed chats warmly with Jane about Ziggy’s name and praises the name Jane. Ed then tells the romantic story of loving Madeline from childhood after watching her play cricket, then rediscovering her years later at a barbecue; Madeline joins in, and their affection is obvious.

Jane feels diminished beside Madeline and Ed’s love and Madeline’s colorful household. When the doorbell rings and Madeline says it is Celeste, Jane anticipates being surrounded by both great love and great beauty. A police-interview fragment follows, with Miss Barnes suggesting parents’ social conflicts outside school may not explain the trivia-night violence, while Thea dismisses that view.
