Chapter Sixteen
Overview
Bel finally voices her suspicion that Rachel is lying, and Ash becomes the first person to take her seriously rather than explain her doubts away. Their conversation reframes Rachel’s return as potentially motivated by money, especially after Ash reveals Rachel negotiated a lucrative documentary deal.
Bel confronts Ramsey with the theory that Ramsey and Rachel staged the reappearance, but Ramsey denies any involvement and explains how he found the case. The confrontation produces a new lead: a recent Rachel sighting in North Conway, which Bel and Ash immediately set out to investigate while Ramsey eagerly turns the trip into documentary footage.
Summary
After school, Bel runs into Ash outside the hotel as he leaves to film local reactions to Rachel Price’s reappearance. Ash notices Bel’s unhappiness and offers to listen as an outsider. Bel decides she has little to lose and tells Ash that she believes Rachel is lying about both her disappearance and her return.
Bel lays out the reasons for her suspicion: Rachel has contradicted herself about the car engine, said she was held for fifteen years instead of sixteen, knew about Bel’s old bracelet despite supposedly having no internet access, and cannot explain why her captor suddenly released her. Ash does not dismiss Bel’s fears. Instead, Ash says he believes her, giving Bel the first real sense that someone is on her side.
Ash suggests Rachel would need a motive if the disappearance and return were staged. When Ash mentions that Rachel met with Ramsey about contracts and negotiated significant money for interviews and life rights, Bel sees a possible financial motive. Bel also realizes the timing of Rachel’s return is convenient for Ramsey’s documentary, which is now likely to attract broadcasters.
Bel takes Ash’s camera and storms into Ramsey’s conference room, turning the camera on Ramsey for a “reverse interview.” Bel accuses Ramsey of possibly orchestrating Rachel’s return with Rachel so both could profit from the media attention. Ramsey denies it, saying he first met Rachel only after her return, believed Rachel was dead, and had no prior contact with Rachel.
Ramsey explains that he chose the Rachel Price case after a random online comment suggested it when Ramsey’s previous documentary failed. Bel asks whether Ramsey’s research found anything that contradicts Rachel’s story. Ramsey says no, apart from various supposed sightings over the years, including one recent report in North Conway, New Hampshire.
Bel presses Ramsey for details, and Ramsey identifies the sighting as a January Facebook post by Alice Moore, owner of Baa-Baa Boutique, who claimed a customer looked like Rachel. Bel decides to investigate immediately and orders Ash to drive. Ramsey, suddenly seeing the documentary value, gives Ash keys, the camera, and release forms, making sure Ash films the trip.
