The Reappearance of Rachel Price

Chapter Nine
Overview
Rachel gives Bel and Charlie the first full account of her disappearance: a nameless man stalked Rachel, abducted Rachel from the car, held Rachel captive for sixteen years, and suddenly released Rachel near Lancaster. Rachel also solves the mall-camera mystery by explaining that Rachel and toddler Bel hid in a recycling bin and were unknowingly wheeled outside.
The reunion does not bring the relief Bel expected. Charlie reacts with fear instead of joy, Bel notices a contradiction in Rachel's story, and the police arrive after outside witnesses report Rachel's return.
Summary
Bel presses Rachel for answers after Rachel says she does not know where she has been. Rachel explains that an unnamed man abducted her, kept her in the dark in what she thinks was a basement, and chained her by the ankle. When Bel tells Rachel that she has been gone for sixteen years and two months, Rachel realizes Bel is now eighteen and apologizes.
Rachel says she did not escape; the man released her. He put a fabric bag over Rachel's head, unchained Rachel, led Rachel through what seemed like a house, and drove Rachel for hours before leaving Rachel barefoot near a road, trees, and a river. Rachel followed the river and road to Lancaster, found Route Two, walked east for about eight hours, refused help from a stranger because Rachel feared unknown cars, and kept going until Bel found Rachel near home.
Charlie arrives, and his reaction unsettles Bel. Instead of embracing Rachel, Charlie appears shocked and frightened, repeatedly asking how Rachel can be there. Rachel tells Charlie the abductor followed Rachel and toddler Annabel from the mall, forced Rachel's car off the road, dragged Rachel from the car, and took Rachel away while Rachel managed to shut the door to keep Annabel hidden inside.
Charlie pushes Rachel to explain the old mystery of how Rachel and Bel vanished inside the mall before the car was found. Rachel says she had noticed the man watching them, so she hid with Annabel in a staff corridor inside a glass recycling bin. Employees unknowingly wheeled the bin outside, allowing Rachel and Annabel to leave unseen and return to Rachel's car before the abductor found them again.
As Rachel retells the story of being released, Bel notices a small but troubling inconsistency: Rachel first said the man left the car engine running, but Rachel now tells Charlie the man cut the engine. Bel tries to dismiss it as a mistake, yet the strange tension between Charlie and Rachel makes Bel uneasy. A hard knock interrupts them; Chief Dave Winter arrives because of calls from neighbors, sees Rachel, and realizes the report is true.
