Bel reaches Patrick Price's dark street and finds Ash waiting outside the house with the camera. Bel apologizes for what Bel said earlier, and Ash accepts with a joke before apologizing too. Bel explains that Rachel has admitted Phillip Alves is not the real answer and that Bel now believes the truth leads back toward Charlie somehow.

Bel tells Ash why Patrick's house matters: Rachel found their hidden camera because Rachel was heading to the same bookshelf, searching for a specific copy of The Memory Thief. Bel connects Rachel's earlier interest in Bel's copy, the book's publication date after Rachel vanished, Patrick's repeated description of it as "very special," and Rachel's birthday gift of a new copy to Patrick as signs that the old copy contains something important.

Bel lets herself and Ash into the empty, overheated house, and Ash starts recording so the truth cannot be taken from Bel the way memory was. They go to the living room shelves, find the green-spined copy of The Memory Thief, and Bel searches through it. At first, Bel finds nothing and nearly loses hope, but Ash urges Bel to look again more slowly.

Reading from the beginning, Bel and Ash notice certain letters have been faintly thickened with pencil. Bel copies the marked letters onto the back of the Wi-Fi password sheet while Ash films and helps track the discovery. The first letters form "help," proving the book contains a hidden message.

Bel continues through the marked pages until the pencil trail ends on page forty-two. Sorting the letters into words, Bel reads the completed message: Rachel Price says she is being kept by Patrick Price in a red truck on the Price logging yard and asks whoever finds the message to call the police. The discovery reframes the mystery and directly implicates Patrick in Rachel's disappearance.
