Chapter Thirty-six
Overview
Police evidence makes Charlie’s disappearance look voluntary: his credit card was found in Vermont, while his phone and passport were dumped near a Canadian-border airfield. Bel refuses to believe Charlie abandoned her and instead becomes more certain that Rachel staged the trail.
Bel nearly identifies proof tying Rachel to the Vermont diner, but the possible evidence has already been taken with the trash. With the police giving up, Bel changes tactics and decides to shadow Rachel until Rachel reveals where Charlie is.
Summary
Dave Winter brings Bel into an interview room and updates her on the search for Charlie. Police traced Charlie’s credit card to a college student, Matthew Abbey, who says he found it under a table at the How Cow Café near Barton, Vermont, close to Robert Meyer’s home. The card proves only that Charlie or someone with Charlie’s belongings was in the area, and it gives police no new lead.
Dave then delivers worse news: Charlie’s phone and passport were found in a trash can at a private airfield near the Canadian border. Because Charlie may have visited Robert Meyer for help obtaining a false identity, Dave concludes that Charlie likely left voluntarily, crossed the border, and is now outside police jurisdiction. Bel rejects this completely, because accepting it would mean believing Charlie abandoned her.
Back home, Bel breaks down in her room and decides Rachel must have staged the evidence to make Charlie look like another voluntary disappearance. Bel remembers seeing a takeout coffee cup in the kitchen trash and connects its logo to the How Cow Café, realizing Rachel may have brought it back after planting Charlie’s credit card and dumping his phone and passport.
Bel searches the indoor trash, then the outdoor garbage and recycling, desperate to find the cup as proof. The cup is gone. Ms. Nelson, the neighbor, interrupts and reminds Bel that trash was collected Monday morning, making Bel realize she is too late and that the possible evidence has been destroyed.
Ms. Nelson asks about Pat’s birthday and then about the man Rachel claimed was watching the house. Bel snaps, insists Rachel invented the man and made Charlie disappear, and lashes out by calling Ms. Nelson nosy. After Ms. Nelson leaves, Bel resolves to stop avoiding Rachel. Bel decides to stay beside Rachel constantly, believing Rachel will eventually lead her to Charlie.
