Chapter Twenty-one

Overview

A filmed family dinner meant to celebrate Rachel's return collapses into accusations, insults, and exposed resentments. Charlie forces Susan to confront her years of believing he murdered Rachel, while Rachel condemns Susan for abandoning Bel.

Rachel also challenges Sherry's control over Carter and needles Charlie about his past girlfriend, prompting Sherry to hint that Rachel may have had someone else before she vanished. Bel ends the chapter overwhelmed but defiant, turning the family's dysfunction into a bitter toast for the cameras.

Summary

The documentary crew transforms the Prices' living room into a staged family dinner, with cameras, lights, microphones, caterers, and relatives crowded around the table. Bel feels alienated by the production and suspicious of Rachel's new gift: a bracelet Rachel says is meant to make up for missed birthdays and Christmases. Bel reads it as another strategic move after Rachel caught on to Bel's snooping and installed a lock.

Bel deliberately sits opposite Rachel instead of beside her, resisting Ramsey's preferred arrangement. The meal begins tensely as Rachel slips and calls Bel by her old name, Anna, and Sherry makes an offensive joke about Rachel's captivity and weight. Rachel then offers wine, Bel provocatively asks if she can drink, and Charlie firmly refuses, revealing how strained and performative the family dynamic has become under the cameras.

Charlie confronts Susan about accusing him of murdering Rachel for sixteen years. Susan gives a reluctant apology but defends herself by saying she believed Charlie was guilty. Rachel initially comforts Susan, then turns on her when Charlie reveals Susan and Edward rarely visited Bel; Rachel condemns Susan for abandoning Bel with a man Susan supposedly believed was a killer.

During the main course, more family conflicts surface. Sherry criticizes Carter's eating because of dance rehearsals, Jeff minimizes Carter's dancing expenses, and Rachel pointedly serves Carter more food, quietly challenging Sherry's control. Bel notices that Rachel's return seems to have exposed tensions throughout the family, even as Ramsey watches the chaos with obvious documentary interest.

Rachel then needles Charlie about Ellen, his former girlfriend who had been the head juror at his murder trial. Charlie explains that the relationship happened years after Rachel vanished and did not last, while Bel remembers driving Ellen away because Bel feared being left first. Sherry mutters that Charlie at least waited until after Rachel was gone, which makes Bel wonder whether Rachel had been involved with someone before disappearing.

Dessert brings more distress as Rachel questions Grandpa Pat, despite Charlie warning that Pat's memory problems will upset him. Pat becomes confused, asks about the yard and then Maria, while Sherry repeatedly pressures Carter to intervene. Overwhelmed by the arguments, accusations, and half-spoken secrets, Bel stands and raises a toast to the most dysfunctional family in America.
